Ever seen racing dragon boats? Check out the Houston Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. This FREE, 9th annual event features 30 teams racing in dragon boats (a.k.a. fancy decorated 40-ft. canoes). Don’t miss the festivities for spectators including arts and crafts, music, cultural performances, and a kids’ zone. NEW LOCATION DUE TO RECENT RAIN… The festival is now being held at the Fluor Daniel campus in Sugar Land (1 Fluor Daniel Dr.) rather than on Buffalo Bayou. Discovery Green park is home to FREE weekly children’s activities every weekend. Hip2B Fit provides a FREE 30-minute fitness class for kids each Saturday with easy-to-follow dance steps from 11:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Children’s Discovery Series every Saturday at noon. It’s all things Poland at Houston’s third-annual Polish Festival including food, music, language, customs, and culture. This FREE event from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. includes traditional Polish food, live music, dancing, and a children’s area with games, face painting, snacks, and fun activities. The festival is located at 1731 Blalock, about 1.5 miles north of I-10, at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church.
A FREE Chamber Music Concert for families will be held at Rice University by its Shepherd School of Music. The program, Elephants and Other Large Friends, adapts children’s books about Babar and Ferdinand the Bull for piano and violin. The program features music, dance, stories, and puppetry.
