I am asked all the time about whether it is better to buy in bulk or not.
My most consistent answer is… it depends!
To support my theory, I went and compared a few different items at wide variety of stores to help answer that question.
It is interesting to see the results, as the best prices for all the items are not at Sam’s or Costco.
Please also remember that both Sam’s and Costco Have membership fees in addition to the club prices.
Sam’s basic membership is $40 per year.
Costco basic membership is $50 per year.
I chose to compare prices at Sam’s Club, Costco, Target and HEB.
And yes! I went to every store and did all the research personally. The most interesting fact of my whole experience in doing this research for this story is that I literally had to pass THREE Sam’s Clubs to get to One Costco. At one point, I was ready to turn around and come back home due to the traffic on the highway.
All prices are regular prices at the stores. No sale prices or coupons were used.
Prices were put into price per package, unit, pound, ounce, etc. for better comparison.
When researching at the stores, I was very happy to see that the items that I had chosen to compare prices on were in most all of the carts in the stores.
This means that these items are most likely to be bought at the Bulk stores and can really help families know if they are really saving money by buying in bulk.
But remember, when buying in bulk, you have to have the space to store the products at home.
