Homemade Laundry Detergent

Here is the segment from Channel 11 News.

This recipe will make you 94 (one tablespoon) loads.
If you plan on using Two table spoons per load, then you will get 47 loads from this.

The best part about this! The price!!

Each tablespoon only costs 2 cents! Can you imagine the money we could have saved, IF we started using this laundry detergent years ago? It saddens me to even think about.

For this project you will need these items:
(I found all these ingredients at my local Fiesta)

1 Large Bar Laundry Soap – 79 cents (found in the laundry detergent isle)
1 Box 20 Mule Team Borax – $2.99 per box (cost is 75 cents to use ¼ of the box)
1 -4 pound bag of generic detergent (or Laundry Soap) – $2.99 per bag (cost is 75 cents to use ¼ of the bag, if that much)
Food Processor OR Cheese Grater
Large mixing bowl
Measuring Cup

Directions:
In the large mixing bowl, measure 3 cups of generic detergent and 3 cups of Borax.
Grate the whole bar of soap into small pieces. This sounds hard, but the soap is very soft and easily grated. Place into the mixing bowl and mix all ingredients well.

That is it! Now you have some very inexpensive laundry detergent to use.

Cost Breakdown:
Soap – 79 cents
Borax – used 75 cents worth
Detergent – used 75 cents worth
Total cost to make is $2.29.

This is a great summer activity for the whole family. The ingredients are easy to find and environmentally friendly.

Comments about the detergent:

Jennifer V. said “I usually use Costo liquid laundry detergent – yours seemed to work as well. I only used it with warm and hot water loads, so I wonder how well it dissolves in cold water. Overall, would use again. I’ll be interested to see how it works on smelly work out clothes and husband’s outside work (grimy) clothes.”

Connie N. said “It works great. We always buy the no smell no dye type, so this was wonderful. We could save money using this.”

Leona I. said “I like Tide! This did not smell the same. It worked”

  • So Not Mom-a-licious

Well I am all about bargain buying. Power to the coupons! And this is an awesome money saver. I haven't used my grater in like two years, so hcances are I wouldn't find the time to grate the soap. Knowing my luck, skipping that one step would screw up everything. But this is an awesome tip..for people who are money and environmentally conscious!

I am stopping by to give you a warm welcome to the SITStahood! We are so glad you could join us and look forward to seeing you around!

This is very interesting. Thanks for that. We need more sites like this. I commend you on your great content and excellent topic choices.

  • Hey There. I found your blog using msn. This is a really well written article. I’ll make sure to bookmark it and come back to read more of your useful information. Thanks for the post. I’ll certainly return.

  • Unquestionably believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the net the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

  • great job. keep going.
