The Garden

Here is an overview of the items that are currently growing in our garden. We have lots of other things like.. garlic, onions, shallots, green onions. But here are just a few pictures. I have been determined to NOT use Miracle Grow this year! I have used coffee and tea grounds, earthworm castings and many other “organic” fertilizers. We can really tell the difference in the growth rate of the produce, but it is worth the extra time and care.

This is a sample of the varieties of lettuce that we grow in our garden. The best salad is homegrown lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes. The kids will devour them. It makes a great lesson for the kids to plant the seeds, care for the plants and then see the result of the hard work… dinner on the table.

These Green Grapes are very sweet! (Not the best picture) We have had this vine for four years now and it is really starting to produce. My kids look forward to “grape season” around our house.

These are Garlic Chives. They have been in my garden for years now. If you have never had them, I would suggest that you try them. The flavor is wonderful and they are used all the time, in too many dishes to mention. We have planted many herbs throughout the years and now we stick to Basil, Oregano, Cilantro, two types of Parsley, Spearmint, and Peppermint. (I am a tea drinker and LOVE to have mint leaves in my tea)

Tomatoes! A Beautiful Blue Bird has eaten two of my large tomatoes. Apparently, the bird only likes the very large fully ripe ones. My luck! To have a picky bird that has only eaten two! We have plenty of the cherry and med. size tomatoes though. Go figure, I guess…even birds have their standards!

    Coffee and tea grounds? Interesting!

I like the idea of growing grapes in the backyard…they’re so good, but so expensive!
