Homemade Scrubbing Powder

For this project you will need these items:

1 Cup 20 Mule Team Borax – $2.99 per box (cost is 25 cents to use 1 cup out of the box)
1 Cup Baking Soda – 66 cents per box (cost is 33 cents to use 1 cup out of box)
1 Cup Salt – estimated the cost of 1 cup of salt to be around 19 cents
Large mixing bowl
Measuring Cup

Directions:
In a large mixing bowl combine equal parts Borax, Baking Soda and Salt.
Mix together well.
Place contents in an air tight container when not using.

Total Cost to make is 77 cents. (I may have estimated the cost of salt to be too high) (Let me know what you think)

Comments about the scrubbing powder:

My opinion – This product is comparable to Comet or Ajax. When using the scrubbing powder, I did find that my hands did not smell terrible after using the product and they were very soft. That was an added bonus! I will be making this product to use in my house from now on.

I tried it on my countertops, and while it cleaned well (got rid of any hairspray build up too), it was a little difficult to get all of the granules off. I had to go over it several times with a wet cloth. The powder also tends to clump when wet – in contrast to my usual Comet cleaner. The lack of fragrance was both good and bad – good in that it lacked the usual overpowering scent, but bad in that I associate that scent with “clean”. This just comes from years of using store bought products. Thanks for letting me try the products I enjoyed trying something different, and better for the environment.”

This is a great summer activity for the whole family. The ingredients are easy to find and environmentally friendly.
I let my kids mix and use this product to clean the sinks. They had fun and now we have clean sinks. That’s a win/win situation to me.
